Z ENERGY NEW PLYMOUTH TANK DECOMMISSIOINING

Project Overview

Nikau Contractors was engaged to deliver the controlled demolition and environmental remediation of the former Z Energy Tank Farm located in New Plymouth. This coastal industrial site presented a complex scope involving large steel storage tanks, tight operational constraints, and hydrocarbon-impacted soils.

The project required a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible approach to dismantling fuel infrastructure while ensuring the site was remediated and left ready for future redevelopment.

Nikau's Project Approach and Solutions

Nikau applied proven heavy-industrial demolition methodologies, combining specialist plant, experienced operators, and robust environmental controls. Key elements of the works included:

Tank Farm Demolition:

The steel storage tanks were progressively dismantled using mechanical demolition techniques, allowing for precise control of collapse sequences and material handling.

Specialist Demolition Plant:

Works were undertaken using:

  • 50-tonne excavator fitted with hydraulic shears for cutting and processing heavy steel plate and structural members.

  • 50-tonne excavator equipped with demolition grapples and lifting magnets for efficient handling, separation, and loading of ferrous materials.

Steel Recovery and Recycling:

All recovered steel was segregated and processed on site, with a total of 500 tonnes of ferrous material removed and sent for recycling, supporting circular-economy outcomes.

Hydrocarbon Soil Remediation:

Contaminated soils impacted by historical fuel operations were carefully excavated, managed, and remediated in accordance with environmental requirements, ensuring protection of surrounding land and waterways.

Environmental Controls:

Appropriate dust suppression, runoff management, and site-specific environmental controls were maintained throughout the works to minimise off-site impacts, particularly given the site’s proximity to the coastline.

Contractor Responsibilities

  • Controlled demolition of steel fuel storage tanks

  • Operation of 50-tonne excavators with hydraulic shears, grapples, and magnets

  • Recovery and recycling of 500 tonnes of ferrous steel

  • Excavation and remediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils

  • Implementation of environmental and safety controls throughout the project

Nikau’s delivery of the Z Energy Tank Farm demolition demonstrates our capability in complex industrial deconstruction and contaminated-site remediation. Through careful planning, specialist equipment, and a strong focus on sustainability, the project was completed safely, efficiently, and with minimal environmental impact.
