Project Overview: Corteva Agriscience Paritūtū Manufacturing Site Decommissioning
The Corteva Agriscience Paritūtū manufacturing site, spanning a 16-hectare parcel situated between Paritūtū Road and Centennial Drive in north-western New Plymouth, has long been a focal point for community concern due to potential environmental and health impacts from its historical operations. Established over 60 years ago, the site’s legacy of hazardous materials and industrial processes necessitated a comprehensive decommissioning and deconstruction effort.
In 2021, Nikau was selected to manage this critical project, collaborating closely with the Taranaki Council, Corteva Agriscience, and other stakeholders from the consent phase through to the execution of the deconstruction. The project required meticulous planning and execution to address the unique challenges posed by the site’s history and operational complexities.
Contractor Responsibilities:
-
Hazardous Chemicals Management:
- Handled and decontaminated hazardous chemicals, including asbestos, PCBs, and lead paint, ensuring safe removal and disposal in accordance with regulatory standards.
-
Site-Wide Remediation Action Plans:
- Developed and implemented comprehensive remediation action plans tailored to the specific needs of the site. This included strategies for addressing contamination and mitigating environmental risks.
-
Environmental Monitoring:
- Conducted ongoing environmental monitoring throughout the project’s duration to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and to track the effectiveness of remediation efforts.
-
Personnel Exposure Monitoring:
- Implemented rigorous personnel exposure monitoring to safeguard worker health and ensure that safety protocols were consistently followed.
-
Collaboration and Training:
- Engaged with local Iwi and other community groups to provide opportunities for employment and training in the field of deconstruction. This initiative supported local workforce development and fostered community involvement.
-
Sediment and Erosion Control:
- Installed significant sediment and erosion controls across the site to manage and minimise environmental impact during the deconstruction process.
-
Structural Demolition and Recycling:
- Carried out the demolition of all on-site structures using advanced techniques. Recycled over 5,000 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous steel, contributing to sustainability efforts and resource recovery.
The successful completion of the Corteva Agriscience Paritūtū project underscores Nikau’s expertise in managing complex decommissioning projects, ensuring environmental protection, and adhering to the highest safety standards.
