Project Overview
The Tui Field is an offshore oil development located approximately 50km off the western coast of Taranaki, New Zealand. Production from the field ceased in November 2019, and Tamarind Taranaki Limited, the operator, went into liquidation in December 2019. In response, the New Zealand government allocated funding for the decommissioning of the Tui Field, with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) taking the lead on this critical project. Nikau was commissioned to provide deconstruction sevices for the project.
Environmental Focus
The primary goal of the Tui Field Decommissioning Project was to achieve a 'clear seabed.' This involves the comprehensive recovery of all subsea equipment and the removal of wellheads. MBIE’s approach prioritises minimising environmental impact through recycling and reusing as much of the subsea infrastructure as possible.
Recycling and Reuse
During Phase 2 of the project, over 1,500 tonnes of subsea structures was recovered. These structures, composed of various materials including steel, aluminium, plastics, and concrete, pose significant challenges for reuse due to their age. However, this was all recycled. The project mains goal was to -

Project Challenges and Solutions
The Tui Decommissioning Project was unprecedented in its size and scope, presenting a range of common and unique hazards. Nikau’s team addressed these challenges by developing and implementing practical and achievable solutions. This approach ensured the project was carried out safely and successfully, adhering to both environmental and operational standards.
