Fonterra Chimney Deconstruction – Te Papa
Project Overview:
The Fonterra Chimney Deconstruction project at Te Papa involved the intricate removal of a 50-meter-tall chimney situated adjacent to live services. The scope of work required advanced demolition techniques and careful planning to ensure safety and efficiency.
Contractor Responsibilities:
-
Safe Deconstruction: The primary responsibility was to execute the safe dismantling of the 50-meter chimney. Given its proximity to active services, a cut-and-crane approach was utilised to manage the deconstruction process while minimising risks.
-
Crane Mobilisation: Nikau deployed two high-capacity cranes—a 250-tonne crane and a 90-tonne crane—to facilitate the precise removal of the chimney sections. The coordination of these cranes was crucial for the controlled dismantling and lowering of the chimney components.
-
Sediment and Erosion Controls: Comprehensive sediment and erosion controls were installed across the entire site. This measure was essential to manage runoff and protect the surrounding environment from potential contamination during the deconstruction process.
-
Asbestos Removal: The project included the safe removal of 50 tonnes of asbestos-containing rope, which was managed with strict adherence to safety protocols. This involved the careful handling and disposal of hazardous materials to ensure the safety of both workers and the environment.
-
Concrete Recycling: All concrete debris from the deconstruction was transported back to the Meremere site for crushing and recycling. This process aligns with Nikau’s commitment to sustainable practices, aiming to reduce landfill waste and promote the reuse of construction materials.
Additional Notes:
-
Environmental and Safety Compliance: The deconstruction project was carried out with the utmost attention to safety and environmental regulations. The site was managed to minimise impact and ensure compliance with all relevant guidelines.
-
Project Execution: The project was executed with precision and efficiency, reflecting Nikau's expertise in handling complex demolition tasks while maintaining high standards of safety and environmental responsibility.
The Fonterra Chimney Deconstruction project exemplifies Nikau's capability to manage large-scale demolition tasks in sensitive environments, demonstrating our commitment to safety, sustainability, and operational excellence.
